On October 16, 2003 the American Mathematical Society and the Bolyai (Hungarian) Mathematical Society commemorated the hundreth anniversary of the birth of John von Neumann, one of the greatest twentieth-century mathematicians, by placing a plaque on the Budapest home where he lived until age 18.

The address of the imposing former von Neumann family residence is Bajcsy-Zslinszky str. 62. This building presently houses several apartments and can be seen in the five photographs below. The unveiling ceremony for the plaque took place in front of the building. There Arthur Jaffe represented the AMS, while Dénes Petz represented the BMS, and Kálmán Kovács, the Minister of Informatics and Telecommunication, represented the Hungarian government. The scientific attache from the US Embassy also attended. You can see the placement of the plaque—just to the right of the blue truck in the final (large) photograph.
